North Carolina, the 28th-largest state in size and the 11th largest in population, is known as the Tar Heel State. One legend says that when Gen. Charles Cornwallis' soldiers crossed a river polluted with tar, the tar stuck to soldiers' feet and the nickname stuck with North Carolinians. Another legend asserts that during the Civil War, North Carolina's soldiers successfully finished a battle that other regiments had abandoned. Later, the North Carolina soldiers said the other soldiers needed tar on their heels so they would "stick better" in the next fight. Gen. Robert E. Lee, upon hearing of the incident, said, "God bless the Tar Heel Boys."
